RetroSynchroniCity: Weaving Community, Enhancing Connections

Project details

Programme
Design Studio Design Studio 2
Year 1

Spitalfields Goods Station, a former East London freight station, was once an important logistics hub, but almost 60 years ago the station ceased to operate.

Today, the site is underutilised and not open to the public. Adjacent to the site is a residential area, but the streets are deserted and prone to crime. In addition, local connections are weak due to railway viaducts and tower blocks developed after the abandonment of the freight lines.

On the other hand, however, the site has great potential to change the whole area dramatically because of the rich natural environment, including the “green roof” of the abandoned railway viaduct.

RetroSynchroniCity envisages a place of coexistence for man and nature, locals and visitors, children and elderly alike. Spitalfields Goods Station used to be a logistics hub, and now can be reborn as a community hub. The site will not only connect divided areas, but also function as a hangout, contributing to the improvement of the urban environment.

As a starting point of the design process, drifting through the area, recording perceptions, and subsequently delving deep into intriguing aspects.

Child poverty is one of the biggest issues in this area and a community garden could be a effective solution as it promotes community cooperation. The façade of the old railway infrastructure on the site can be utilized as a backdrop for the stage.

By anchoring a community garden at the heart of the linear park, this space transcends being a mere conduit of movement and actively enriches the local community, fostering empowerment.
