The Room Under transforms a 600-metre space beneath the Hammersmith flyover into a vibrant public area, harmonising with both people and nature. It features diverse activities and ecological habitats.
This eco-conscious retrofit includes event spaces divided by piers, designed to embrace natural elements like rain. An open, interconnected walkway combats disconnection, offering versatile activity spaces curated for diverse content. It's a dynamic site that adapts rather than remaining fixed, incorporating reused materials to minimise impact.
The design also establishes a new community centre, bringing together various facilities in Hammersmith. This encourages visitors and commuters to linger rather than just pass through.
In doing so, a novel space beneath the massive concrete structure emerges, offering enjoyment to people and addressing environmental concerns like biodiversity, urban air quality, urban heat island temperatures, and water storage.
Ecological habitats and event spaces continuously interact, creating a delightful new Hammersmith landscape.
