Urban Oasis: Enhancing city resilience through afforestation

Project details

Programme
Design Studio Design Studio 2
Year 2

This project aims to enhance urban greenery and biodiversity while preserving the area's unique identity in a London Zone 2 neighbourhood. The plan involves reusing existing materials and cultivating native tree seedlings with the help of local volunteers. The initiative will use the Miyawaki afforestation method, known for its rapid establishment of micro-forests.

The project's central mission is to create a versatile space that bolsters the local market and enhances the wellbeing of residents. It will include seating areas, communal spaces, and an inviting connection with nature. Sustainability is central to the project's ethos and aims to reuse existing materials, minimising carbon emissions. The project will reinvigorate an underutilised old market area and become an environmentally conscious and enticing locale for the community and local wildlife. The afforestation project excels in both swiftness and cost-effectiveness and involves active participation from local community volunteers. An on-site nursery will ensure the sustainability and resilience of the urban forest.

The rain, once a cause of flooding, now brings joy and playfulness as it saturates the trees and wildlife and creates a dynamic space connecting residents, historical buildings, and the park.
