Kilburn Uncovering Park: The Risk of Flooding From Lost River With River Restoration

Year 2

Kilburn in northwest London resides by a river delta formed by the Westbourne River, flowing out of Hampstead Heath. From the 19th century onwards, the river was heavily polluted by the toilet revolution and high levels of pollution from industrial production. It became an essential north - south sewer in the Joseph Bazalgette scheme and converted into an underground pipe system. However, extreme rainfall due to climate change can lead to the city's surface being flooded during the summer months. Therefore combined sewer systems are no longer able to handle sewage and rainwater during storms, leading to pollution and the waste of natural water resources.

This project will benefit from separate sewer systems. The strain on stormwater pipes from Kilburn Grange Park to Kilburn Park Road will be reduced - rapid drainage during the rainy season will be provided by a flood channel that doubles as a recreational area for residents, providing economic opportunity for Kilburn High Road. Flood ponds and pocket gardens are proposed to connect to the river and improve storm water treatment, also dealing with extreme weather events while improving the living environment.

Kilburn Uncovering Park consists of six parts: Kilburn Grange Park in the north, Kilburn High Road canal, North and South Kilburn Rivers, Kilburn Roof Link and Kilburn Park in the south

It reflects the underlying content and residential life of the South Kilburn area, as well as the underground river running through it on the rightside, which is the human basis of the design

The stepped terrace allows people to get closer to the river and softens the six metre height difference, making it a great place to enjoy the sunshine on a summer's day.

The second part of the canal is designed to ensure rapid flood discharge. The space is gradually more expansive, so two levels of residential roads are added. It is fun to imagine a scene where the river is just a curtain away.

As the river runs through large warehouses and the national railway, a roof link is created to better form a complete movement and experience, while the warehouse roofs are used to create a community centre while harvesting rainwater.
