This project is located at Crayford and Dartford marshes, which have been polluted by human activities over the years and have been shrinking for various reasons, with much of the marsh converted into grassland, farmland, and recreational areas. There are also some remains of historical factories and buildings that once existed on marshes, which many people are calling for preservation.
To restore these two marshes to their pre-industrial state, while retaining industrial buildings, it is necessary to remove part of the embankments so that water from rivers can enter the marshes when flooding. This could help marshes and rivers form a water cycle to maintain the Crayford and Dartford marshes. More floodplain scrapes and ponds should be created for various habitats, and some socio-cultural activities could be launched on this site.
Due to such a long history of industrial development in Crayford and Dartford marshes, human activities have gradually encroached on these two marshes, including but not limited to industrial areas, farms, etc.
There are five issues on the site that are contributing to marsh shrinkage, including industrial and recreational activities, excessive water abstraction, uncontrolled dumping of industrial waste and lack of management of brownfield areas.
There are two brownfields in these marshes, which are known as Well’s Firework Factory and the historical site of Orchard Hospital. These two brownfields are able to provide safe and comfortable habitat for wildlife.
“Feral landscape” doesn’t have to mean that existing buildings on the site have to be demolished, but that buildings and rubbish can be part of the landscape, which could lead to the gradual formation of a unique industrial and ecological landscape.
