A Taste of Vegetarian Britain

Year 1

A Taste of Vegetarian Britain reimagines land once reserved for livestock farming, aiming to create a harmonious and productive space for a future where the British population becomes vegetarian. This is done through the creation of three zones on-site.

One zone offers a sanctuary for ex-livestock animals. It features wildflower meadows for grazing as well as promoting more insect life on-site. The second zone transforms former paddocks into a food forest. Designed swales and berms capture water which is particularly important in a context where dry periods are forecasted to happen more and more often in the future. The food forest, through the layering of different varieties of fruit trees, shrubs and more, creates a productive landscape that also fosters biodiversity.

The third zone embraces nature’s growth, allowing the existing forest on the site to expand organically. Around the site, footpaths are created using mycelium bricks to invite the local community to engage with the space and make it a recreational site as well as a productive one. The project prioritises sustainability and coexistence, welcoming both animals and humans to create a balanced and serene landscape.

The masterplan unveils a productive food forest in the south, and ample grazing meadows for retired livestock. The design is created around an existing forest area which is given generous space to extend naturally, promoting biodiversity.

Grazing meadows offer a peaceful retirement for livestock animals. Footpaths winding around the fields allow wanderers to explore the area. It is a sanctuary, a respectful and caring approach to the well-deserved retirement of these animals.

Footpaths throughout the space are designed using mycelium bricks made from materials gathered on-site. As such, bricks degrade within years, providing an opportunity to engage the community through the regular relaying of the footpath paving.

This section offers a glimpse into the crafted food forest. Lush vegetation thrives, promising sustenance for all. The topography serves in the creation of swales and berms, carvings in the soil that gather water.
