Fostering Community Waters: Creating a Common Ground Through Chalk Stream Landscapes

Project details

Year 1

Chalk, with its unique properties, holds a significant place in the history of the UK. One of its remarkable qualities is its ability to give rise to chalk rivers, which emerge from chalk aquifers and support a diverse array of habitats and species. Among the many chalk rivers in Hampshire, the River Itchen flows through Winchester, symbolising the invaluable role chalk plays in shaping the natural landscape.

However, the importance of the river has resulted in changes in landownership and access, leading to a growing divide in society and limiting the benefits to the wider community. Moreover, historical land practices and urbanisation have gradually altered the course of the river and ground conditions, culminating in flooding issues within urban areas.

Considering these challenges, several key questions arise: Can the proposed design serve as a buffer between public and private areas, utilising chalk as a primary material? And is chalk acting as a mediator in this context?

To understand the site and its surroundings, a test was performed to determine the extent of flooding on the site as well as the potential locations of silt deposition, which further formed the basis for the design proposal.

The masterplan weaves together a tapestry of diverse human experiences and the tangible material essence of the design. It seeks to encapsulate the myriad ways in which individuals interact, perceive, and engage with the environment it shapes.

The project is designed around seasonal river level changes, spilling into Pond 1 during winter. Water flows through a silt trap into Pond 2. Water then passes through reed bed filters before returning to the river. Levels then recede towards summer.

The design aims to create a harmonious relationship between public and private realms, utilising chalk to create a resilient landscape by providing floor protection, ecological enhancements and connecting visitors with the processes of the river.

Using water as the main feature, giving residents and park visitors plenty of opportunity to return and experience the area, these constructed wetlands also provide opportunities for environmental education and experiences.
