N-th Told Stories: Unfolding the Socio-environmental Unrest of Tyneham Village

Project details

Year 2

This project takes place in Tyneham, Dorset, an abandoned settlement which has undergone conflicts with militarised land ownership and shifting habitat configurations which threatens its current ecosystem. The project speculates the future scenarios of the fleet of the military occupation, exploring military references - specifically the tank - as the starting tools for ecological management. While addressing site accessibility and ecology, it intends to retell Tyneham’s militarised history but also question the ethics of military ‘greenwashing’ and the wider issues of military operations.

The development of the project was heavily based on research on the tank’s mechanics and ground condition interactions to formulate the outcome of the design proposal configurations. This started off with conducting sandbox experiments with a remote control (RC) and 3D printed tank model, which created a tool kit which acts as the foundation layer of the proposal. This is then further conceptualised through a series of iterative collage plans, models and renders.

A sample of the collection of different tank track prints created using the RC tank. This one series shows the 90º turn which creates narrow ridges at the edges that encounter the tank sides, forming depressions below where the tank moves through.

This collage shows the early works of the design development, wherein the desired components were layered onto a 1:250 scaled map with various textured materials. This realised the ambitions of extending the priority and the recreational networks.

Using the tool kit as the foundation, it was used to collage the details of the design proposal and realise how its constructed, takes shape and its hydrological and planting networks. This diagram shows the formation of a butterfly bank.
