Given the gradual depletion of surface stone resources, quarries on the Isle of Portland are gradually transitioning to underground mining. The project aims to attract birds that were once displaced by quarrying activities and re-establish a close connection between people and birds through the ecological restoration of abandoned quarries on the Isle of Portland.

The Isle of Birds explores three categories of important birds that might be attracted to the area: popular star bird species, predatory birds, and birds that are habitat sensitive but often easily overlooked. Their own unique but closely linked habitats have been created by implementing innovative approaches to soil transfer, vegetation management and the use of quarry waste.

Translations of bird sound spectrograms have been combined to create ecological environments that are both functional and artistic, in order to provide a low-disturbance, immersive bird-watching experience. Ecological conservation with public participation is combined, facilitating the restoration of ecological balance, providing a unique place for nature lovers to get closer to nature and deepen their understanding.

By restoring original meadow habitats, recreating wetland habitats and shaping ecological zones, birds’ requirements can be met. Birds will be attracted while mitigating the fragmentation of ecological patches and environmental issues.

By attracting puffins, other social birds will be attracted to the site. Excavated soil from the site is placed within the puffin habitats, facilitating puffin burrowing. Retaining walls, plantings, and seasonal maintenance will prevent soil erosion.

Sound spectrograms from birds are parametrically adapted as the basis of the habitat designs and combined with existing site conditions to create the ornamental and restored bird habitats.
