Landscape of Protest

Project details

Programme
Design Studio Design Studio 6
Year 1

Located near Mannheim, Germany, this project is situated on an island in the Rhine opposite the largest chemical plant in the world, operated by chemical conglomerate BASF.

This project uses the geography of the island as a reflection of BASF and acts as both a visible and metaphorical protest against the environmental damage caused by the company’s pesticides. The design aims to both act as a landscape of activism against current practices and as a landscape imaginary of a pesticide-free future. This is achieved through the reforestation of riparian areas representing the island’s historic forests, the development of habitats for the rare European Green Toad (a symbol of resistance and a bioindicator), and the design of a community agricultural area focussed on pesticide-free farming.

The design site is located on Friesenheim Island between Mannheim and Ludwigshafen. Numerous industries are clustered on and around the island due to its strategically significant location on the Rhine.

The design strategy envisions a site of resistance through reforesting historic woodland, habitat for the rare European Green Toad (a protest symbol and bioindicator), and pesticide-free agriculture.

As visitors and activists move through the site, the geometry of paths and ponds mirrors the geometry of the surrounding factories, and a series of spaces enable meeting, discussion and protest.

The forest transforms over the course of a century, from an initial grid formation into an established riparian forest, enabling flood mitigation and mycoremediation of the pesticide-contaminated soil.

Restoring Ancient Riparian Woodland

A complex of shallow ponds supports the toad as a vulnerable symbol of resistance against the goliathan factories. A boardwalk allows visitors and researchers to observe and monitor toad populations.
