Along the Rhine River in Germany, the climate crisis has caused increasing floods and droughts impacting the rich local wine culture, which has existed since the Roman Empire. Bingen, a wine region, has been facing difficulties with the production and quality of local wine varieties, especially Riesling, due to changing climate conditions.
This project proposes to transform the land around Bingen over the next 50 years into a network of wetlands and rice paddies, which will adapt to changing climate conditions and will bring a new era in Bingen’s wine identity through the gradual replacement of Riesling wine production with rice wine. In this way, wine romanticism, which began in ancient times, will continue to form a crucial part of the landscape of Bingen.
Through filtering wetland layers, river water will be purified into agricultural water. All wetland plants are suitable for the German environment.
Purified water will be transported into re-treatment water plants and will be stored in reservoirs. Clean water will be supplied for rice agriculture.
A winery for rice wine will connect with rice paddies and Bingen town. Wine festivals and winery events will be held.
A new rice wine industry will be a solution for Germany's climate crisis such as droughts and floods, which affects Riesling wine production.
Agricultural water will be purified before being released into the river. A wetland layer between paddies and rivers will purify used water from paddies.
