This project aims to address the contribution of the built environment in the trajectory of the climate crisis. It does so by redefining the production of newly designed landscapes through a circular economy of material reuse. During the redesign, waste is created and reused on-site to avoid further extraction and pollution. The project site of central Margate offers a compelling starting point for redesign; it is a landscape of morphing chalk coastlines and changing social demographics which tells geological, ecological, and social stories.
While the project is conceptually concerned with uncovering and reimagining geological and material futures, it is also rooted in local knowledge and needs. This is guided by information collected through conducting interviews, creating new friendships, and taking observations from Margate. As such, what is proposed is a redesign of three central nodes that enhance Margate’s creative identity by providing green spaces for art, performance and environmental education. To sculpt the material landscape is to listen to its past, observe its present and tell its future.
