Connect
Stemming from the observation of the ancient Via Francigena, the pilgrims’ patterns, the promoted routes, and the local features across the site, the project explores the possibilities of connecting those features in various route combinations to create a better quality space and can mutually support each other.

Conserve
This project also emphasises promoting many historical features that exist along the selected route. Supported by Kent’s government programme to promote the route, this design also proposed to increase the tourism interest and open opportunities for the local economy to develop.

Coexist
Blending with nature, pilgrimage is a search for meaning, purpose, values, or truth. Promoting access to local edible flora and produce becomes one of the project’s objectives. The pedestrian path along the pilgrim’s route is used as the planting space. Different edible plant variations were used to create dynamic routes that take part in the form of signage for wayfinding. An understanding of edible plant species can be a medium of educational value provided by the design.

The project aims to enhance features of the local landscape along the Francigena route through an edible route strategy. Local enterprises and stakeholders are involved in order to boost the local economy while preserving the landscape identity.

Shelters and Connections

Shelters and Connections

New shelters are created along the edible route to create a meeting point for the pilgrims and the locals. The proposed shelters emphasise local landscape features, and are built with locally sourced materials and craftsmanship.
