Year 1

This project is an initiative aimed at revitalising Wan Chai, one of Hong Kong's most historic neighbourhoods, by constructing an interconnected waterway canal system and pedestrian deck, which will replace the existing traffic roads. One of the central goals is to tackle the segment-line issue that has separated old and new Wan Chai, enhancing the connectivity and walkability between the two areas. The idea is to reconnect the old urban district with its historic waterfront, promote a walkable "15-Minute-City" lifestyle, and prioritise people's needs over vehicular transport.

Through weaving in elements from Wan Chai's rich history, the project intends to celebrate the district's cultural heritage. Selected sites for development, each representing a distinct era, will be connected in a historical journey, narrating the vibrant story of Wan Chai. This historical narrative helps create a unique blend with the modern water promenade open space network.

Through seamlessly reconnecting Wan Chai with its lost waterfront, it encourages a healthier, walkable lifestyle prioritising the needs of people over vehicles, and creates a landmark icon for urban innovation.

Embracing Wan Chai’s maritime past and unique cultural significance, the project will introduce water channels to mitigate urban heat island effects, and create a network of recreational open spaces to promote native biodiversity.
