The Millwall Extension Railway (MER) opened in 1871. It served as a branch line of the Blackwall Railway, running through the Isle of Dogs and was mainly utilised as a cargo port. The line remained largely underused, only increasing in popularity when the Millwall football team played at home. The railway was short-lived and eventually closed in 1926. With the modern development of the Isle of Dogs, the MER was almost completely forgotten. Eventually it was replaced by the Docklands Light Railway (DLR). However, most of the DLR tracks from Island Gardens to South Quay were rebuilt on the ground of the original MER.
This project explores the traces of this old line, selecting the sites of three of the old railway stations as the context for the proposition. The project upgrades and transforms the landscape along the line, exploring the possibilities for the future development around this site which is standing on the edge of history and modernity.
Providing the basic design concept for each site; floating bridge, park under the railway and natural theatre on the old bridge, participants were invited to use these modules to test and create different design options.
