Bloomsbury is a manifestation of everyday life and accentuation of occasional higher forms of political activities and modern advancement. It is also an intellectual and cultural heartland of London, where many universities are based.
This project begins on the edges of university campuses - Gordon Street, Gordon Square and Torrington Square. Currently, there is segregation of university campuses in Bloomsbury. The quality, content, and intensity of social contact in these public spaces can be enhanced with appropriate landscape designs. Bricks, as building materials, embody the essence of both fluidity and rigidity. Their various permeabilities weave public and private spaces, bridge the gap between individuals and society, find harmony in the interplay of the organic and the artificial. Time blurs, boundaries break, and minds connect. The new Bloomsbury has become a true intellectual heartland for idea sourcing and self-expression, enriching the lives of those who encounter the area day to day.
Focus on paving and create a better wayfinding pattern to direct students to the meadow. Integrate spaces for animals, plants, brick structures, water and people. Demarcate spaces with brick walls, but also simultaneously enhance accessibility.
Bricks are strong construction materials, but they have high embodied energy. Consideration should be given to using high thermal mass materials with lower embodied energy, such as recycled brick that made of a high percentage of waste.
Exhibition Space, Attenuation Pond, Stage, Sculpture Park, Meadow and Market. Scattering walls promote freedom of expression, biodiversity and thermal comfort. Water cascades along the rooftops and to the attenuation pond.
Focus on public-private transition, pedestrian-oriented circulation, and district definition. Provide a versatile platform for people to express themselves intellectually and artistically.
Sand, bricks, and people in society may seem uniform, but a closer look reveals a world of individuality. The educational system filters individuals like sand and casts them like bricks. What kind of system do we have? What do we need?
