A 'Scattered' Home for Beijing Migrant Cleaners

Project details

Programme
Year 1

Perhaps it was a fortuitous moment.

While wandering through Bejing's hutong with friends last summer, I glanced upward and noticed the word ‘universe’ on a solar collector installed atop a residential building's roof.

Beyond it stretched the endless dark sky.

This scene seemed to reflect people's desire to maximise available resources as they 'borrowed' the rooftop and solar energy.

Meanwhile, beneath this very cosmos, different lives unfolded.

This project aims to explore the role of architecture in enhancing the lives of migrant cleaners in Beijing, who face precarious situations and an uncertain future in the context of Beijing's ongoing urban restructuring. It also seeks to raise public awareness about the inequalities experienced by this marginalised group and shed light on their challenges.

Beijing's 'capital functions' include politics, culture, international communication, and technological innovation. Those functions not related to these are defined as 'non-capital functions'.

Combined with the idea of 'adaptive reuse', migrant cleaners could furnish the structure with reclaimed items, echoing hutong residents' sustainable, creative reimagining of everyday objects.

The three-tier strategy weaves a care network into the city. Scale 01 adds a 'layer' to the Siheyuan Building's roof, giving cleaners a convenient place to rest and socialise.

Scale 02 is a 'shelter' from severe weather and a 'living room' with essential amenities for cleaners. Meanwhile, an outdoor pavilion is available for storing salvaged items.

On the one hand, Scale 03 supplements functions that may be lacking in a cleaner's residence; on the other hand, it encompasses caring in various aspects: economic, mental, skill-related, etc.
