The purpose of this study is to identify and assess the architectural practices of Hong Qing (1913-1979) and Zhang Jinqiu (1936-), two architects in Xi’an who were in charge of major government-funded projects from 1949 to 1992. Architecture is a product of its time and as such, the research also aims to analyse their designed works in order to study their interpretation of 'nationalism' in civic buildings. As the architects who worked on municipal projects were heavily influenced by policy, the study will also involve the impact of diplomacy relations, national policy and local planning. It is also hoped that this study can provide some additional explanations of the localised expression of contemporary architecture in Xi’an.
