This project aims to analyse the impact of historical policies at different times on the spatial transformation of the Dan Jia fishing raft settlement, as well as their influence on the contemporary production and lifestyle practices of the Dan Jia people. Visual output is created through StoryMaps to build a narrative website documenting the previously unknown water-based community at Dan Jia (疍家) and the story that intertwines their living, production and growing environment.
Introduction to Dan Jia's fishing raft environments and function.
The Dan Jia fishing raft community is located in Xincun port, Lingshui county, Hainan province.
The morphological evolution of the Dan Jia fishing raft settlement can be divided into four stages: port clustering; shallow shoal distribution; from water to land; amphibious maturity.
The spatial transformation gradually influenced Dan Jia people’s spatial practices, impacting both economic and social structures.
The social structure is mainly based on residential modes: boat dwelling, shed dwelling, self built house dwelling and fishing raft dwellings.
