Divergent (Im)Mobilities: Experiencing Situated Double Consciousness of (Im)Migrants in London

Project details

Programme
Year 1

This collection of interactive handmade artist’s books narrates the titular topic from the perspective of a multi-conscious self. Embarking from the ever-changing borough of Stratford, it represents a journey of navigation and interaction with urban environments to explore oneself and the concept of 'Londoners', delving into questions of where, who and the process of becoming.

Utilising the five senses that provide our brains with signals and transport us elsewhere, dialogues with the city unfold. As we physically enter through doorways, walk beneath bridges, or climb ladders in London, we find ourselves 'teleported' to diverse destinations, spanning the past, present, and the realm of imagination.

Having more than one consciousness fractures reality into fragments. This allows us to not only embody the perspective of an Asian female (or any other ethnicity) but also to observe as we navigate London. As revealed by the physicality of the books, the city exposes itself in layers: the obvious, the concealed, and the interconnected.

From the positionality of a multi-conscious Asian female, conversations with the city unfold through encounters with people and places. This project discusses assumptions and prejudice from a personal perspective.

Becoming a Londoner?

Becoming a Londoner?

What does Londoner mean to you? While starting to feel the familiarity of places and even a sense of home, do you feel comfortable saying “I’m from London”?

Divergent (Im)Mobilities, The NoPlace, and The Routine support one another to narrate the experience of (Im)Migrants in London. The physical copy is handmade with an adapted dos-à-dos binding method.

Conversing With the City by Flipping the Pages

Conversing With the City by Flipping the Pages

By flipping through the pages, dialogue is created with the alternation of materiality of papers, translucent, opaque, and cut-through, breaking the conversation with the city into layers.

With the aim of heightening public awareness regarding both spoken words and actions, this project serves as both a research endeavour and a personal, emotional and experimental artwork.
